At HR Poppin’ Snacks, popcorn isn’t just a snack—it’s our passion. For decades, HR Poppin’ Snacks has been crafting delicious, flavorful popcorn that keeps customers coming back for more.
Our story began in 1999 when Gary and Cheryl Hughes saw a need for high-quality flavored popcorn after local popcorn stores closed. Determined to keep the tradition alive, they purchased equipment from Munchville at the Hilltop Mall in Kearney, which was going out of business. Cheryl balanced her nursing career during the day while learning the art of popcorn at night. Her dedication paid off, and after a few years of hard work and growth, she made the leap to popcorn full-time.
Passing the Torch
In 2025, a new era began when Katie and Brandon Garrels became the proud owners of HR Poppin’ Snacks. Brandon, raised in Gibbon, NE, and Katie, raised in Kearney, NE, moved back to Kearney in 2023. Through Brandon’s work, their paths crossed with Cheryl, and they were presented with the unique opportunity to take over the business.
“We are very fortunate and blessed with this opportunity,” says Katie. “We’re excited to share this AMAZING popcorn across the country!” When they’re not busy running the business, Katie and Brandon are blessed with four beautiful children who keep them on their toes and on the go.

What started as 25 flavors has now expanded to over 125 flavors, including Sugar-Free options, giving popcorn lovers endless ways to enjoy their favorite snack.
